Flavorpill August 13-19, 2001 http://www.flavorpill.net The Flavorpill is a weekly listing of music, arts and cultural events in NYC - a filtered guide of the best our city has to offer. No individuals, companies or organizations pay to be included; all selections are based on what we think has the flavor. And it's free, so spread it... NYC: No Dancing Allowed (Event) Thur 8.09 (film & panel: 7:30pm - 10pm /dance party: 10pm - 1am) Makor (35 West 67th St., 212 .601.1000) Free film & panel discussion / $5 for dance party Makor Once considered the capital of the nightlife world, NYC is starting to resemble Lehi, Utah (of Footloose fame) with its stringent laws regarding dancing in public venues. Currently, a venue cannot allow dancing, defined as "three or more people moving in synchronized fashion" (give us a break!) without an almighty cabaret license - of which there are now only 296 in NYC compared to 12,000 in 1960. Tonight, the nonprofit NYC-based music community, Michpucha hosts a point-blank discussion of the history, implementation, and ramifications of NYC's controversial cabaret laws with a panel discussion featuring leading members of Manhattan's nightlife, and cultural and legal communities. This will be preceded by a documentary film on the controversial laws and followed by a no-holds-barred legal dance party with legendary DJ Nick Siano. The first person to tell us what year the cabaret laws went on the books will win a pair of tickets to the after-party. The flavorpill is a weekly mailer of music, arts, and cultural events in NYC. If you have an event that should be listed here, please send an email with all the details and contact information to events And, as always, if you have any comments, ideas or rants, let us have it at feedback The pill chooses music, arts and cultural events based on the flavor selections of the editorial team - NO clubs, artists or promoters pay to be on this list. We'll tell you if that ever changes. Spread the flavor...
