Bass Guitarists Are Under Appreciated
Jaco Pastorious is the world’s greatest bass guitarist. I won’t be surprised if his name doesn’t ring a bell. The reason is simple, because he played the bass.
Sad but true, bass players are underrated.
Unlike Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, Jimmy Page, Slash, and John Lennon, they’ve become big time rock stars because of their instrument of choice. Compared to six string lead guitarists, bass players, since the late fifties, haven’t dominated the music industry.
The bass is the soul of a song. It is not usually played as fancy as Van Halen’s shredding guitar songs, but it plays an important role in the rhythm section.
Bass guitarists are team players. They always give way to the vocals and the other instruments, except for the drums. The job of the bassists is to make sure that the music they play won’t fall apart. The bass player and the drummer are the back bone of any musical group.
While the lead guitarist is playing alongside the singer, and enjoying all the attention, there he is, located in the back of the stage, carrying a heavier, longer, bulkier instrument, making sure everything is intact, with his low, hypnotic strum...the bassist.
There are also bass guitarists who play solo. Stanley Clarke, Stuart Hamm, Victor Wooten, and the man who started it all, Jaco Pastorious, to name a few. Their music would “wow” anyone who really understands music. They’re mind blowing. Sadly, no matter how good they are, they can’t be as popular as the guitar gods.
The fact that over the years, bass players are still underrated, is heart breaking.Being a bassist, I would love to see the excellent bass players up there too. They deserve to be recognized. Playing the bass is not an easy job. The instrument itself is very essential in making music. It keeps the groove. It literally moves people. It’s not good music without the bass. I know so because I play the instrument. Musically speaking, Groove + Soul + Backbone = Bass Playing
With all due respect (because I’m also a fan of the guitar gods I mentioned above),bass guitarists deserve the spot light too.Besides, they are often the most accomplished musicians.
